Roles and tasks :
On this project, I am the system and narrative designer. I want players to experience the world that we created through game mechanics and systems first, environmental details second and then through textual elements.
As a system designer, one of my main tasks was to work on the macro and micro gameloops as well as the overall structure of our game. With our 3C designer and game programmer; I worked on the protagonist’s shooting abilities & with our AI designer and programmer, I work on the dynamic between the AI’s combat behaviour and our main character's.
As a narrative designer, I try to find narrative weaknesses in the game that could be strengthened through game systems as well as ways to make systems more memorable through added narrative elements. Bringing a story to life really is a team effort. I often work with the art and level design team to convey our story through the environment.
As a system designer on a small team, UI is also part of main daily work. It is not the only way but indeed a very efficient way to convey signs and feedback to players as well as make my systems more understandable to the team and playtesters . So very early in the game, I tried to create placeholder sprites and video mockups that give the team a feel of what the game could look like. Once we’re all pleased with a UI system, I do implementation and animation with UE4 sequencer.
